BMW F 900 R: Roadster for Daily Use

In the motorcycle or naked roadster class, BMW Motorrad Indonesia has a new champion that they brought in mid-2020, namely the F 900 R. This German motorcycle roadster is certain to disturb class rivals such as the KTM Duke 790, Ducati Monster, to the Yamaha MT-09.

But of course BMW has a lot of bullets to beat its rivals. So what does the BMW F 900 R have to offer and what does it feel like for daily use? Check out our review this time!

Iconic Design

The BMW F 900 R comes with a design that has a thick aura of its European motorcycle roadster. The design is frightening, has many tapered accents, and looks modern like the current BMW design language. At first glance, this motorbike's posture is similar to a street fighter-style custom motorbike. The silhouette looks solid in the front, but slim in the back area.

From the front, you can see the iconic headlights. It looks snug, but the dimensions are wide enough to accommodate a sophisticated set of lights that BMW calls the Headlight Pro. Unfortunately the upward light area, looks empty and has a niche that makes the design in front a little awkward.

But at the front it is still special thanks to the legs that already carry the front upside down and clamping the ring 17 rims with 120/70 tires. The front brakes also look luxurious because they come with dual 320 mm discs clamped by 4-piston calipers from Brembo on each side.

Sliding to the side, the design looks sleek but solid in the shroud area. On the shroud, the F 900 R looks jumawa thanks to the BMW emblem that is displayed and strengthens its character. Then slide to the general-looking seat area thanks to the fused model seat.

In general, the dimensions of the F 900 R are not intimidating. Noted, the length is only 2,140 mm, the width is 815 mm, and the height is 1,130 mm. If you are not familiar, the width is only 60 mm or 6 cm and the height is 50 mm or 5 cm from the Yamaha MT-25.

Slide to the back area, this F 900 R also comes with special parts. The rear already carries the Dynamic ESA electric model that links to the swing arm. Then the figure of the hind legs also looks muscular thanks to the ring 17 rims wrapped in 180/55 tires.

So in our opinion it is difficult not to like the overall design of the BMW F 900 R. In its class, BMW comes with a design that is quite iconic and has character.

An Easy-to-Tame Beast Machine

Dissecting and finding out the specifications of the BMW motorbike engine is quite easy. Just check the name, F 900 R. F means the BMW engine code for an inline two-cylinder engine, 900 means the engine capacity range.

The BMW F 900 R carries a liquid-cooled, DOHC, 8 valve engine. The exact capacity is at 895 cc. This inline two-cylinder engine uses pistons with a diameter of 86 mm and a stroke distance of 77 mm.

On paper, BMW claims the engine has a maximum power of 105 HP at 8,500 RPM and a maximum torque of 92 Nm at 6,500 RPM.

Now behind this savage engine, it turns out to be quite easy to tame even for laymen. That's thanks to the driving modes that BMW has instilled into the F 900 R, starting from the calmest Rain mode, the natural Road with the power output, to the most sensitive Dynamic.

During testing, when we don't want to pump up our adrenaline and go for a leisurely walk, we prefer to use Rain mode. The distribution of power feels limited, even though the gas is squeezed in. This mode is the most suitable for the layman.

But when you are pressed for time or you want to rush, poke the driving mode into Dynamic and the BMW F 900 R is ready to put out its best power. Although the distribution remains linear, in Dynamic mode, the power and torque come out more instantly.

In general, the BMW F 900 R engine is very adaptable to needs. Not to mention, this engine is mated to a quick shifter that BMW calls Gear Shift Assistant Pro. So to shift gears from 2nd gear up and at more than 4,000 RPM rotations, we don't have to bother pressing the clutch.

But the thing that disturbs and characterizes the MOGE is the engine heat distribution which is less 'relaxed' in certain conditions. From our testing, this BMW F 900 R engine when brought crawling in traffic during the day, will emit hot air that shoots directly into the calves. Beauty is pain, right?

Excellent Handling and Suspension

As a motorcycle roadster or naked type, of course the riding position of the BMW F 900 R is more comfortable for everyday use and more friendly to various body postures. This is further supported by the dimensions of the BMW F 900 R which are not intimidating.

However, what needs to be considered is the handling when it is carried to creep or be shifted in the parking lot. This BMW F 900 R weighs 211 kg or if you are not familiar, this weight is almost the same as two Yamaha Lexi. But that's if it's in a crawling condition.

In conditions of running at normal to high speed, the gambot BMW F 900 R changes its character drastically. The chassis feels very compliant with the twists and turns, moreover, the handling feels even more relaxed thanks to the steering damper.

The suspension is no less special. The BMW F 900 R which carries the upside down pretentious with a travel distance of 135 mm, has a mature character. On bad roads, the quasi is good enough to dampen so that the rider becomes comfortable. But at high speed, the quasi becomes calm and makes control more convincing.

While the rear quasi is more adaptive and can be adjusted electrically. Through the touch of a thumb, we can choose the character to play pretentiously behind it, want a harder Dynamic or a softer Road.

In addition, you can also adjust the load according to the passengers or goods carried. It can be set for one passenger, two passengers, or one passenger with goods. So that they will play with more appropriate characters.

Sophisticated Features of Today's BMW

BMW, the German automotive manufacturer, is well known for its expertise in designing sophisticated cars and motorcycles. No exception for the BMW F 900 R which is present in the Indonesian market.

Behind the ruthless engine, cool control, and excellent suspension, BMW certainly wants to keep the driver safe and in control. For that, a myriad of safety features are certainly presented in this F 900 R.

As standard, of course the F 900 R is equipped with ABS Pro. In addition there is also Dynamic Traction Control which will keep the motor under control even if the gas is opened suddenly and excessive traction. Then there are also braking features such as Dynamic Brake Control and Engine Brake Control.

As we mentioned when discussing the engine, the F 900 R is also equipped with a quick shifter feature which they call Gear Shift Assistant Pro whose performance is very smooth.

Then for the suspension business, Dynamic ESA was also presented by BMW to this motorbike. With this feature, the pretentious character of the F 900 R can be adjusted easily with the touch of a finger.

Not to forget as a modern BMW, the F 900 R also comes with BMW Motorrad Connected which is available on the TFT instrument cluster screen. With this feature, motorbike owners can connect their smartphone to the motorbike cluster instrument screen. So you can view maps more easily, view notifications, and access multimedia currently playing on your smartphone.

If you don't want to connect it to a smartphone, the F 900 R instrument cluster screen is quite attractive and informative. In addition to the speedometer, tacho meter, and fuel meter, this screen can also show the tilt position of the motorcycle when turning, tire pressure, and many other trip information.
